A Love of Family, Faith and Work: Mennonites of Cuba, Missouri

The Missouri Photo Workshop has been documenting small town America for over six decades and this year for the 68th workshop staff photographer Keith Birmingham joined them for 7 days of documenting the small town of Cuba, Missouri.
From the outside, 5-Star Buildings is just a local business like any other. But when you look closer, listen a little harder, and take it all in, you can find love, compassion and faith – all pillars of the Mennonite faith – present in this small-town business.
Cuba Missouri holds just under 3,500 people, and even less when you count those of the Mennonite faith. Owner Kris Zimmerman, a man drawn by faith in God, owns and operates 5-Star Buildings which build and sale portable buildings. He works with a handful of people including the Kauffman family who share his faith, creating a tight-knit family atmosphere.
All are drawn together by faith as they try to love according to the teachings of Jesus Christ. They quietly practice what they teach holding church services on Sundays in a unassuming building adjacent to the work shop and include Wednesday-evening church gatherings. They help the community in their own way, giving to those who are in need whether it be money for gas, food or a moment of prayer all without seeking praise.
